Vatican Euro Coins "New Euro Coin Set After Pope Benedict XVI Resignation"

Vatican Euro Coins - The news website euronews is reporting that the Pope will resign on the 28th February 2013 because he no longer has the strength to fulfill the duties of his office. This will be the first time since the early 15th century that a Pope has retired. Conclave to elect the new pope will be held in March.

Once a new pope is elected, the Vatican will issue a new standard coin set (4th Series) featuring the new pope. Pope Benedict was elected in April 2005 but the new standard set was issued 1 year after - April 2006, thus, it is very likely that the new 4th series will be issued next year. However, since this time the Vatican will not issue a Sede Vacante standard coin set, it might issue the new standard coins this year.

During last Sede Vacante, the Vatican has issued a new series of standard coins, however, this won't happen this time as the EU has changed the rules - now the Vatican is allowed to issue another 2 euro commemorative coin to commemorate the Sede Vacante - thus this year we expect two €2 commemorative coins from the Vatican.

Let us see what happens in case of Netherlands.
Much has changed since 2005, including ban on Sede Vacante type of issues and possibility of two commems. The speed at which commem coins are being issued ( see Luxembourg wedding and Netherlands abdication ) means that 21st century has finally arrived.

I believe the new coin set with a new Pope will be issued in 2014. Traditionally, in a country where a head of state dies or abdicates, the new coin set is released the following year. I do not remember a case when coin sets with both old and new heads of state would have been minted the same year.

the timelines are very similar to those of 2005 - and we all know that the new pope set was out a year after

however last time, in the same year the pope died they had issued a sede vacante standard set and maybe that is why the new set with the pope was out the year after

this year there wont be a sede vacante standard coin set so this makes the scenario different

The Commission of the European Communities issued a recommendation on 19 December 2008, a common guideline for the national sides and the issuance of euro coins intended for circulation. One section of this recommendation stipulates that:
Article 5. Changes to the national sides of regular euro coins intended for circulation:
"... the designs used for the national sides of the euro coins intended for circulation denominated in euro or in cent should not be modified, except in cases where the Head of State referred to on a coin changes ... A temporary vacancy or the provisional occupation of the function of Head of State should not give the right to change the national sides of the regular euro coins intended for circulation."

Thus Vatican City has all rights to issue a fresh set with the new pope.

I think there will not be any 2013 set with new pope. But who knows...

Collectors are trying to build up a 2013 set with both popes and Sede Vacante coin.

What is happening? Collectors are going crazy. Yesterday evening a standard euro-coinset Vatican 2013 in presale was sold for 421 euro!!! I can´t see why the abdication announcement should make the prices go skyhigh. The mintage is still the same, and 2 days ago the presale price was around 50 euro!!!!

The last Pope to resign willingly was Celestine V in 1294 after reigning for only five months, his resignation was known as "the great refusal” and was condemned by the poet Dante in the “Divine Comedy”. Gregory XII reluctantly abdicated in 1415 to end a dispute with a rival claimant to the papacy.

I wonder if there is a ritual linked to resignation - if yes we didnt see this for several centuries

It seems it's such a rare event that there probably isn't anything fixed, so there will be just some ad hoc parts attached to a mass I guess
