Slovakia Euro Coins 2013 "Saints Cyril & Methodius" €2 Commemorative Coin

This is the design that will appear on the Slovakian €2 Commemorative coin dedicated to Advent of the Mission of Constantine and Methodius to the Great Moravia - the 1150th anniversary. The design is very similar to a draft which was suggested for the standard coins of Slovakia which however was not selected (back in 2007/2008).

19 October 2012 - the following are the designs that came second and third respectively

20 November 2012 - Slovakia was asked to drop halos from new two-euro coins featuring the nation's patron saints, Cyril and Methodius following complaints from some EU countries. The European Commission and some member states have asked Slovakia to remove some symbols from the draft coin to comply with the principle of religious neutrality. Thereby, the original designed looked a bit different from the above, but Slovakia was asked to make it Religion neutral e.g. no halos on the head of the saints

Fantasy Design of how the design might have looked like before it was amended

23 November 2013 - The Bank Board of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) today approved the original proposal for design-euro commemorative coin mission arrival of Constantine and Methodius to Great Moravia - the 1150th anniversary, hence the halo and crosses. This is how the original Design looked like;

27 November 2012 - The Central Bank of Slovakia has just published both designs on its website. It is still not clear which design will be minted.

14 December 2012 - The news portal Webnoviny.sk is reporting that the European Commission has approved the original design, that with halos and crosses, thus this coin will be minted and circulates in all the euro area

19 February 2013 - Today the European Commission published the image and confirms that the Saints will have the halos - see here
