The current president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, will term his job on the 31st October, 2011. Thereby, the European Union will have to elect a new president. The new president will be the third one so far. The signature of the president appears on the euro banknotes, thus, any banknotes printed after October of  this year will have the signature of the new president. The new president is still not chosen, however, the Italian Mario Draghi is the favorite so far to take this role.

In this pleasing economic situation is absolutely one who will be president of the European Central Bank. This may be quietly and Italian.

PRESS RELEASE

9 June 2011 - ECB’s Governing Council adopts an opinion on the appointment of a new President

At today’s meeting, the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) adopted an opinion on a recommendation from the Council of the European Union on the appointment of a new President of the ECB.

The Governing Council had no objections to the proposed candidate, Mario Draghi, who is a person of recognised standing and professional experience in monetary or banking matters, as required by Article 283(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

Following the Governing Council’s opinion and an opinion of the European Parliament, the decision on the appointment will be taken by the European Council, with the votes of its euro area members.

The ECB opinion, which will be published shortly in the Official Journal of the European Union, is available on the ECB’s website in all the official EU languages.
