Joint €2 Euro Coins "50 Years of Franco-German Friendship" €2 Commemorative Coins

According to the MDM facebook page and some other websites, France and Germany next year besides the national 2 euro commemorative coin will issue a joint €2 commemorative coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty also known as the Treaty of Friendship which was concluded by Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer in 1963. It set the seal on reconciliation between the two countries. With it, Germany and France established a new foundation for relations that ended centuries of rivalry between them.

According to the European Union rules each country can issue only one €2 commemorative coin per year, however, in case of joint issues it can issue a second coin. So far the joint issues were always issued by all the eurozone countries and not just by some - so if this coin comes real it would be a new interpretation of the law. It would also open the way for the new members states that joined the euro to issue a joint 2 euro commemorative in 2014 when these countries celebrate the 10th anniversary since they joined the European Union.

04 April 2012 - Munze Berlin on its facebook page confirmed that Germany next year will mint two coins of €2 commemorative. The mint has just published the numismatic programme for 2013.

23 April 2012 - La Monnaie de Paris, on facebook, today confirmed me that it has plans to issue this joint coin together with Germany, however, said that the details are not yet fixed.

25 April 2012 - The magazine website DMM today also reported that Germany next year will issue a 2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the 50th years of the Franco-German friendship. The website also indicate that is not yet certain if both countries will have a common design or not, however, it is certain that the coins will feature the portraits of President Charles de Gaulle and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer

02 September 2012 - on StarShop Forum the following image was posted, however, we still have to verify if the image is authentic or not. If that is the actual image, then both the German and French coins will look the same, only the French on will have a "RF" at the bottom.

03 September 2012 - According to MDM and the Berlin Mint facebook pages, the design published yesterday is not the one that will be minted on the coins. The official design has still to be revealed - the Berlin Mint said "Probably it will be announced on 19th of September after a decision of the German government."

anyway, we will see what will happen. i would never think that any country will mint 2cc per year.

all things are about speculations... at the end...i hope all "political things" about coins will never injure collectors...

martin, why do you think? e.g. VAT minted 2cc euro in 2005. i think they will see good bussiness to sell more coins.

German brothers are real recorders. They minted each CC 2€ in 5 diferent mints, we can "enjoy" to next year from 10 beautiful German coins...

yes i am sure less people will afford to collect these coins. If each country is allowed to mint 2 coins then i hope that minimum mintage volumes is also set
