According to the MDM facebook page and some other websites, France and Germany next year besides the national 2 euro commemorative coin will issue a joint €2 commemorative coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty also known as the Treaty of Friendship which was concluded by Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer in 1963. It set the seal on reconciliation between the two countries. With it, Germany and France established a new foundation for relations that ended centuries of rivalry between them.
According to the European Union rules each country can issue only one €2 commemorative coin per year, however, in case of joint issues it can issue a second coin. So far the joint issues were always issued by all the eurozone countries and not just by some - so if this coin comes real it would be a new interpretation of the law. It would also open the way for the new members states that joined the euro to issue a joint 2 euro commemorative in 2014 when these countries celebrate the 10th anniversary since they joined the European Union.

Comment by giorgos on April 30, 2012 at 21:27 it is a correct reading of the European Union rules. According to the new regulations a country can issue a 2 euro commemorative coin and a second one together with one or more eurozone countries

Comment by Robi from Brussels on April 26, 2012 at 11:19 I still doubt this is a correct reading of the European Union rules. I hope all these rumours are confusing 2€ commemorative with "collectors coin". It would be much more appropriate.

Comment by Daniele on April 25, 2012 at 21:34 mmm.... does this coin comply with the EU rules?

Comment by pavol on April 4, 2012 at 22:15 anyway, we will see what will happen. i would never think that any country will mint 2cc per year.
all things are about speculations... at the end...i hope all "political things" about coins will never injure collectors...
They don't sell more coins! Vatican is allowed to mint 2.300.000 millions in coins per year, 260.000 are for the CCs (so 130.000 coins). What they do, they mint 65.000 x 2? First Italian Mint shouldn't accept it, second Vatican has clients, the right number to give them the issues of the year, in this way 65.000 clients don't have anything.
It's not right ehat you say.
Comment by pavol on April 4, 2012 at 22:00 martin, why do you think? e.g. VAT minted 2cc euro in 2005. i think they will see good bussiness to sell more coins.
Little country will never mint 2 CC coins, I mean, SM or Vatican always mint 130.000 coins. Make two CC per year for these countries is impossible ...
We will see 2 CC per year from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and maybe Netherlands, Greece, Slovenia and Finland.
Comment by Numizmatik Peter on April 4, 2012 at 20:56 German brothers are real recorders. They minted each CC 2€ in 5 diferent mints, we can "enjoy" to next year from 10 beautiful German coins...
