Belgium Euro Coins 2013 "100 Years of Tour of Flanders" €2 Commemorative Coin

Fantasy Image

According to the blog Euromunten, Belgium next year will issue a €2 commemorative coin to commemorate the 100th year since the beginning of the tour of Flanders. The Tour of Flanders is a Flanders Classics road cycling race held in Belgium every spring. According to the same blog, Belgium will also issue another €2 commemorative coin, however, the theme is still unknown.

09 January 2013 - The same source that had announced the issue is now saying that the €2 Commemorative Coin "100 Years of Tour of Flanders" has been cancelled. This issue was also confirmed by Dutch mint website as per here. It is not known why this issue was cancelled and now it is unclear if Belgium will issue 2 coins or just 1.

Then why was it cancelled?
Controversaries lie in the minds of politicians.

Where is the controverse in the "100 Years of Tour of Flanders"? This is just a sportive event!

Why can't Belgian authorities select some non controversial topics like great buildings ( as Germany does) ( say Antwerp Railway station) or great works of Art ( as San Marino does) ( say paintings of Peter Paul Reubens or Ven Eyck brothers)?

I actually support the idea. Let's go back to the good old practice of minting one 2 Euro commemorative coin per country per year!

It would be funny if all €2 CC that suppose to be issued this year would be cancelled :D
