Coins will be issued on the 25th April. Mintage 1.750.000 (6.000 FDC and 6.000 Proof).

The king of Belgium, his majesty Albert II has just announced that he will abdicate his throne on the 21st July 2013. As the standard coins of Belgium feature the king, this will mean that Belgium will issue a new set of standard coins. Belgium already has two series of standard coins (plus an amendment) and thus this will be the third series for Belgium.
The Belgian mint has just announced the winning design that will be minted on the 2 euro commemorative coin that Belgium will issue towards September. The coin theme is "100 years of the Royal Meteorological Institute". More than 700 designs were submitted which were then shortlisted to 35 and later to 5.

January 1, 2009, Serge Lesens was appointed as the head of the Belgian Royal Mint and thus all the coins minted since then were showing a feather as a mint master mark.
