Malta Euro Coins - This year the central bank of Malta will issue the third 2 euro commemorative coin in the constitutional series - it will be dedicated to the Establishment of Self-government in 1921. This coin will be firstly available this May in the BU set together with the standard coins dated 2013. Unlike in the previous years, this year, the bank will issue only 35,000 BU sets and not 50,000 - the price will also drop by €5, 30eur instead of 35eur. This 2 euro coin will have the highest mintage volume so far, however, it is not yet clear if the 500,000 volume is the total mintage or else the volume of coins in the rolls only. In any case this is the highest mintage for the constitutional series. Rolls and proof coin will be available in October.

2011 2012 2013

Total Mintage 430,000 455,000 542,500 (or 500,000?)

Rolls 375,000 400,000 500,000 (or 457,500?)

Proof 5,000 5,000 7,500

BU Set 50,000 50,000 35,000

Background - Self Goverment 1921

Although the British retained various reserved matters under their direct control, including defence and foreign affairs, the 1921 constitution was the most democratic up to that point. It made provision for a Legislative Assembly to be returned by an extended franchise, and for a Senate sitting as an Upper House. For the first time the administration of Malta's domestic affairs would been trusted to a Cabinet of Ministers responsible to an elected legislature. The Maltese government could initiate legislation in various domains. After three general elections, trouble arose between the administration led by the Constitutional-Labour compact and the Church, heralding a period of recurrent turbulence. English and Maltese were recognized as official languages in 1934 when the culture clash came to a head and the Nationalist administration, which had been returned in a landslide in 1932, was dismissed in 1933. It was not until 1947 that self-government was restituted, whereupon the march towards social and political reform resumed. The plan to integrate Malta with Britain having failed, in December 1957 the Labour and Nationalist parties agreed to 'break with Britain', but a few months later the Labour government resigned and 'self-government' once again went into abeyance.

100 Years since Crete was Annexed to Greece and

Platonic Academy

750,000 of each coin will be minted

The Academy (Ancient Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια) was founded by Plato (424/423 BC – 348/347 BC) in ca. 387 BC in Athens. Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) studied there for twenty years (367 BC – 347 BC) before founding his own school, the Lyceum. The Academy persisted throughout the Hellenistic period as a skeptical school, until coming to an end after the death of Philo of Larissa in 83 BC. Although philosophers continued to teach Plato's philosophy in Athens during the Roman era, it was not until AD 410 that a revived Academy was re-established as a center for Neoplatonism, persisting until 529 AD when it was finally closed down by Justinian I

The Cretan State (Greek: Κρητική Πολιτεία, Kritiki Politia), was established in 1898, following the intervention by the Great Powers (Britain, France, Italy and Russia) on the island of Crete. In 1897 an insurrection in Crete led the Ottoman Empire to declare war on Greece, which led Great Britain, France, Italy and Russia to intervene on the grounds that the Ottoman Empire could no longer maintain control. It was the prelude of the island's final annexation to the Kingdom of Greece, which occurred de facto in 1908 and de jure in 1913.

That's plenty.
